Project 3
Our project is coming along very nicely and Crystina is such a joy to work with. We both have been feeding off each other's ideas and trying to make them better. We met at the park down the street from school last Thursday during the furlough time and took some pictures of some bright kids toys. We are creating a story about two little pals and I think it is going to be very cute. To tie in the stock photo idea we are making one whole side of the book a picture and then the other side a bright colored paper. In between will be vellum with some shape cut out of it and it will slowly get bigger and bigger. Crystina had this idea, kind of like an old movie when they pan out. The same shape will flip onto the bright paper to focus on whatever little storyline we have for these two characters on that page. At the end we will have something about how the right photo can complete your whole design and these two characters go hand in hand just like your photo and your design. We have not nailed down all the dialogue yet but that is what we plan on working on in class on Tuesday.
Field Trip
The field trip to Typecraft was very informative. David gave us such a thorough explanation and tour of the printing facilities. You think about things going to press and how you would set them up,etc. But it doesn't really hit home until you really see what it is like at a printing company. Going into typecraft reminded me of my job working at a small print shop during high school. I had forgotten about this, it was long before the time that I thought about becoming graphic designer. Seeing everything that goes into it really makes you appreciate design. David really shows a passion for the work that they have created. He really made me think about what it means to be a graphic designer, it made me proud and inspired me to create works of art like some of the one's he showed us.
Project Three
My lovely partner Crystina and I discussed many options today (including designing a peice for the paper company "Dundler Mifflin"..haha) and came up with what I think is going to be a fun and successful idea. She is really interested in photography so we are going to utilize her skills and make a promo peice for a stock photography company. Our idea is to have a fun theme of looking through a child's eyes or even trying to touch on adults inner child with different photographs and bright colored paper on the opposite side of the photograph throughout the book.
We are both researching and brainstorming ideas for photos as well as what photostock company this peice will be made for.

First Draft
So I had a mishap with my file and had to start completely over??? You never think it is going to happen to you and then it does and it is just another reminder of how important it is to save your work frequently and in many different places. Anyways..I am obviously still working on it. I plan on giving it more dimension with the background and the type but this is the general idea and I plan to carry on the blowing dandelion seeds throughout the rest. Cheers!!
Happy Spring Break everyone....I hope people are checking in because I need a lot of feedback to help me through this project..thanks

Digital Roughs of Package Design
I need A LOT of work I know....I am either doing the dandelion idea or the swirls with the Ai going across diagonally. With the dandelion I want to work on doing something funky with the picture. The orange one is just an example but I would definetely improve on it dramatically. I need to get my photoshop tutorial book out and find something really interesting to do to the photo. I like the idea of the seeds being used throughout the package like "ideas" being blown around (?) make sense??? The idea with the swirls is that it can be continued as well. The package would be all white and I would like the lettering to look like a shadow or burned in to the white so they would not be "outlined" like they are now, it would be outlined with a soft color or shadow?? I need to figure out how to do that in photoshop. But if you can picture the lettering like that with bright, warm colored swirls behind it that is the idea there??? And yes, if I go that route I would dramatically improve on the swirls as well, these are just traced from the internet and are not one's that I would use in my design.
Cheers!!!!!
Cheers!!!!!
DESIGN CHANGE
After class on Thursday I changed my mind and decided to do the Adobe Creative Suite packaging design. I assumed that a lot of people were going to do this and after class it did not seem like many chose it so I decided to venture into redesigning this package.
Project 2: Software Packaging
After lots of time looking at software at stores and online I decided to redesign the McAfee line of Antivirus products.
When you think about it, the package has a lot of responsibility. It has to grab the customer’s attention, usually in a crowded space with thousands of other products competing for consideration. With software packaging, the customer is usually in task completion mode and not just browsing so their attention needs to be grabbed quickly. Here are some interesting facts about packaging:
• A pack on a shelf has approximately 3 seconds to grab the audience’s attention.
• For most new products, the store shelf is the first, last, and potentially only time to facilitate a purchase decision.
• Packaging generates impulse purchases
• A typical package generates 570 million impressions each year.
It is too bad that despite the importance of packaging, it can veer so far off course from the purpose. Sometimes the packaging is so overloaded with marketing messages and information that we tend to lose the brand identity in the mess. This is a great video link that demonstrates this, it is pretty funny

I kind of felt like this is what I saw when looking at a lot of software packaging. Is there a way to simplify it? I usually know what I want when I go to buy software and don’t even pay attention to all the extra information. Even if I did understand it I probably would still not pay attention to it.
Packaging should represent the brand identity of the company. It needs to inform people, but also create feelings and communicate emotions, it will probably be the last chance to as it will likely be the last chance to influence a sale.
I would really like to come up with a way to design the packaging to minimize the waste. I love the line from Candace Hartley’s “If we are all carrying 8 gigabytes of virtual space on our key chains, why shouldn’t the software section at Fry’s look like the gum display? A lot can be learned from the gum display.” I totally agree, why does there need to be such a big box for usually one or two cd’s?

Poster Samples
The idea is to use the swirl design to follow the athletes...maybe put a little of the city somewhere in the background. I was really inspired by the Chicago Olympic Bid and the posters they created with the stream of color behind the athletes. I think I could do the same idea with the swirl and then be able to use different athletes. I also liked the simplicity of using the swirl as the torch.
Project One-First Phase

These are some of the inspirations that I am using for my design. Looking at this may help you to visualize the direction I am trying to go when viewing my thumbnails. I really like the Arabic typography and calligraphy. I used the Arabic alphabet as an inspiration and one of my designs incorporates the Arabic number 2, I used that to represent 2020 (and I liked the shape of it so it worked). I really love the color of the city lights and the sculpture on the top right. I thought about incorporating these colors and using the idea of the small shapes coming together like the sculpture to create some of the simpler shapes in some of my designs. Who knows, it is a work in progress but I hope this helps get my point across.
Summer Olympics 2020 Dubai, India
Dubai is the most cosmopolitan city in the Middle East. It has the most happening nightlife and lots of oppurtunity for great shopping. It is kind of like Middle East meets Hong Kong with a little Las Vegas thrown in for style. It is the perfect mix of cosmpolitan and easygoing lifestyles with sun, sand, sea, and shopping...the perfect place for the 2020 Summer Olympics. While doing my research I found that Dubai is actually going to bid for the summer Olpympics..maybe they will use my design...haha!!
